We like to start the event on a high-energy level. The guest of honor will be announced into the room accompanied by upbeat music. After the guests shake hands and congratulate the honoree, we engage in a few Jewish and Israeli dances to liven-up the party. We can even coordinate the traditional chair dance.
The candle lighting ceremony is an opportunity for the guest of honor to recognize and honor his or her family, friends, and mentors. A small speech is given prior to these individuals being called forward to light one of the thirteen candles to the accompaniment of a special song chosen by the Bar/Bat Mitzvah honoree. A memory candle may also be lit to honor a deceased loved one.
When the music stops the children freeze.
The Bar/Bat Mitzvah honoree picks partners, who pick two partners, who pick four partners, who pick eight partners, etc.
NAME THAT TUNE
Gather your guests into small groups to name a variety of songs. Children can ask adults for assistance.
PASS THE OBJECT
When the music stops, whoever has the object being passed is out. Be creative with the music and the object.
Divide children into two groups. Each group should be on opposite sides of the dance floor. You call “Coke” one side runs and sits on the knees of the Pepsi team, and then call “Pepsi”. They do the same to the opposite side. “Pepsi Cola” means the sides switch names, and if you call the Bar/Bat Mitzvah’s honoree’s name everybody freezes.
Play upbeat dance music so the kids can dance and sing-a-long with the song. Call out a low number (2, 3, or 4) and make the kids get into smaller groups of that amount. All the “leftover” kids or the last to get into a group are “out”.
FINISH THE SONG
Divide the children into numerous groups of different sizes. Choose two initial groups, play a song, then stop the music. The first group to recite the next five words of the song correctly stay in. Move on to two more groups. Keep playing until only one winning group is left.
